| Home | FAQ | SIGMOD |
| 1. | Is the dbgrads service free? |
| Yes. Both adding your entry to the dbgrads system (if you are a student), and searching the dbgrads database (if you are an employer) are absolutely free. | |
| 2. | Do I need to join ACM or SIGMOD before accessing the dbgrads system? |
| No, you do not have to join ACM or SIGMOD in order to use the dbgrads database. This is true for students and employers alike. However, joining SIGMOD, the premier professional organization for database researchers and practitioners, is highly recommended in general. | |
| 3. | Why do I need to register first? |
| To avoid misuse of the dbgrads system, all users need to register first. Except for preventing misuse, registration also allows personalization of the search results. | |
| 4. | I was not able to activate my account. Something is wrong with the activation URL I got from the system. |
| Please make sure that you type the entire URL, since it is usually too long to fit in one line and wraps over to the next line. | |
| 5. | I performed an update on my personal entry a couple of hours ago and I still haven't gotten an email confirmation. Did the update go through? |
| Although unlikely, there is always a chance that something might go wrong (power failures, program crashes, etc). You should get an email confirmation with every change, however, not getting email does not mean that the database operation failed. The best thing to do is to first View your entry, and then update it if you realize that your previous update did not go through. | |
| 6. | I want to put a link to my homepage, but my resume is in a non-HTML format. Where should I add my entry? |
| It would be best to have your resume in HTML and include a link to your home web page from it. A resume in HTML means portability (everybody can print HTML) and indexability (most search engines do not index non-text pages). However, if for some reason you do not want to have your resume in HTML, you can make a mini web page with two links: a pointer to your resume (in a non-HTML format) and a link to your homepage. Put the URL of this mini web page as your resume URL in the dbgrads system | |
| 7. | What is your privacy policy? |
| Please look at the disclaimer. | |
| 8. | I am a student, can I get a listing of all the job opportunities with the various employers? |
|
Although the dbgrads system only has listings of students, the dbjobs system is a
searchable database of database job openings. Your dbgrads user
account is valid for the dbjobs system, so you do not have to register
again.
These are some other places that you can look for job postings:

| 9. | I am a student interested in databases. Is there any other organization except for SIGMOD that I should know of? |
As a matter of fact, except for ACM SIGMOD (ACM's Special Interest Group on Management of Data),
you should also know about:

|
| 10. | How does the dbgrads system work? |
| A paper in the March 2000 issue of SIGMOD Record, entitled "Generating Dynamic Content at Database-Backed Web Servers: cgi-bin vs. mod_perl," briefly descibes the dbgrads system. | |
